Children's Book Week
Children’s Book Week will be celebrated May 10 – 16, 2010.
It all began with the idea that children’s books can change lives. Since 1919, Children’s Book Week has been celebrated in homes, schools, libraries, and bookstores across the country. Local celebrations emphasize the importance of books and reading in a child’s life. Larger national programs help direct attention to the vital role literacy plays for every child. As Frederick Melcher, a founder of Children’s Book Week, stated so well: “A great nation is a reading nation.”
The Children’s Choice Book Awards are a major element of Book Week. Beginning in early spring, children across the country have the opportunity to vote on their favorite books, authors, and illustrators of the year. Their favorites are celebrated at the annual awards gala held during Book Week. Who knows better than kids themselves what truly excites them about reading?
